LEARNING GOALS

LA University created five University Learning Goals designed to help guide you as you gain a greater

understanding of key subjects vital to your education.

Our goal is to help you successfully reach your academic and professional goals and equip you with the

skills you need to make a difference in your workplace and in your community. The University Learning

Goals—the essence of the University education—are incorporated throughout our academic programs,

curriculum and instruction.

An Education that Demands More, Helps You Become More.

1. Professional Competence and Values

As a graduate, you will become proficient in specific disciplinary knowledge and be able to apply this

knowledge immediately in real-world settings. You will demonstrate values and ethics appropriate to your

area of study and engage in lifelong learning to remain competent in your professional field.

Apply Real-World Knowledge to the World Around You.

You’ll learn relevant material you can apply immediately to your workplace. And, you’ll become a lifelong

learner who continues to remain current and competitive in your field.

2. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

As a graduate, you will be able to reason clearly and critically. You will be a problem solver, able to

identify and evaluate problems, utilize critical-thinking skills to recommend alternative solutions, select

and implement a solution and analyze the consequences and outcomes.

Dare to Think of New Solutions to the Biggest Challenges.

You’ll gain critical-thinking and problem-solving skills you can use in the classroom and on the job. You’ll

learn how to evaluate challenging situations, find innovative solutions and analyze the results.

3. Communication

As a graduate, you will be able to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear, concise and correct

manner. You will use proper grammar and punctuation. You will analyze the needs of your audience,

adjust the content of messages, choose from a variety of communication tools and deliver your message

accordingly.

Communicate with Clarity, Meaning and Impact.

Knowing how to write clearly and communicate effectively is essential at work and in life. You’ll learn how

to be an intelligent communicator who can reach out to your co-workers, potential employers and

community members.

4. Information Utilization

As a graduate, you will be able to effectively access and use information. You will research issues, gather

information from a variety of sources, analyze the plausibility and accuracy of information, and utilize it

appropriately to address issues or inform action.

When you know where to find the right information and how to use that information, you’ll be more

knowledgeable about the issues and better prepared to present an argument or pitch a concept.

5. Collaboration

As a graduate, you will work effectively in diverse groups and teams. You will be a collaborator, able to

function well within a team as both a leader and a follower. You will embrace diversity and treat others

with respect.

Work Together to Develop More Powerful Ideas.

You’ll learn there is strength in numbers, whether you’re working on a team as a student or as a

professional. Through active collaboration, you’ll gain valuable experience and insight from the people

around you—who will also challenge you to grow as an individual and as a team member.
